Fasting & Prayer – Part 2

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE FAST AND PRAY

(Luke 4:1-2) Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 2 being tempted for forty days by the devil. And in those days He ate nothing, and afterward, when they had ended, He was hungry.

(Luke 5:33-35) Then they said to Him, “Why do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

  • Fasting is not us trying to get more of God, its God getting more of us.

(2 Kings 4:3) Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. (5) So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out.

  • Fasting is a spiritual discipline for those who want to be empowered by the Holy Spirit.

(Luke 5:36-37) Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [a]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined.

  • Fasting heightened Jesus’ awareness of His identity and purpose.

(Luke 4:14) Then Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and news of Him went out through all the surrounding region.

  • Going in with internal power but coming out with external power.

(John 4:31) In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat of which you do not know.”.”

(Mark 9:28-29) And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?”29 So He said to them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.”
