Good or God

Pastor Louis Johnson, August 13, 2017

We have to have discernment to recognize the difference between good and evil.

(Hebrews 5:14) But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

Solomon asked God for discernment to recognize good and evil.

(1 Kings 3:9) Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?”

Good is all about a reference point.

(Matthew 16:23) But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

(Mark 10:18) So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

There is a good that will lead you away from God.

(Genesis 3:6) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.

(Proverbs 14:12) There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.

(II Corinthians 11:3) But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity[a] that is in Christ.

(Genesis 2:16-17 GNT) He told him, “You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, 17 except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad.[a] You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.”

Phase 1. To get Eve’s focus away from God’s generous provision.

(Genesis 3:1) Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”

Phase 2. To negate God’s word.

(Genesis 3:4) Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die.

Phase. 3 To pervert God’s character in her eyes.

(Genesis 3:5) For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Phase 4. To offer the good being withheld.

(Genesis 3:5) For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

(James 1:16-17) Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.

There is nothing good outside of God.

(II Timothy 3:16 NLT) All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

It’s all about the scripture.

(Hebrews 2:1 NLT) So we must listen very carefully to the truth we have heard, or we may drift away from it.
